Liked the perspective you have here. Protect yourself from falling into the pit of pessimism and cynicism while also not going full-on toxic positivity. I personally find myself just ignoring all news because it never seems to benefit me in any way to read it or listen to it. If it's important, I'll eventually hear about it. I suppose that makes me ill-informed at times, but I prefer to focus on what I can control for the sake of my own mental health. I agree we're resilient and not doomed! Good piece, I'll look out for more of your writing.
What drew me in is I write thought-provoking pieces with a similar blend of philosophy, self-development, and psychology, and I add in biology. Based on your writing, you might find it interesting
Nice essay, and perspective Jon. I’m relatively new to Substack and still only finding my way around. I’ve read a couple of your newsletters now and I’m impressed so planning to read your complete collection. Keep up the good work.
This is great and a huge reason why I’ve just joined Substack. The endless negative news has been really affecting my mental health and I know that the media thrives on this fear, because the more they can scare us, the more traffic they’ll get. Growing up, I was quite negative as well and while sometimes I fall back into that trap, I’ve found that being cautiously optimistic is the key.
Ah yes, the Airplane Principle… my wise younger sister calls it “boarding your helicopter”… once up there you see that the map is not the territory. Thank you for this essential reminder as I find myself losing my joy to the torrent of bad news. When I take in the scene from above, I see good people doing great things, I see red cardinals building nests, and crocuses peeking through the cold earth. 🙏🏻

I can relate to that for sure. Thanks for reading, Alex!

Means a lot to hear that. Thanks!

Hey Kenton, thanks for taking the time to read my essays, and welcome to Substack!

That’s all we can do! Thanks for reading

Such an important message. Despite the horrors we are still here, it’s a beautiful place to start.
